Is Oat Milk Bad for You? The Myths & Facts

It’s hard to believe a beverage as basic as oat milk could cause an outrage, but this coffee shop staple has certain social media influencers up in arms lately.

Haters claim oat milk spikes blood sugar and is nothing more than “starch juice.”

We asked a real expert—MyFitnessPal registered dietitian Joanna Gregg—to weigh in on the myths and facts about the controversial alt-milk.

Oat Milk and Blood Sugar

The concern about oat milk is understandable, because there are some confusing nuances about it. While most manufactures don’t actually add sugar as an ingredient, maltose, a type of sugar, is created by the oat milk manufacturing process.

“The maltose found in oat milk is digested more quickly than the sugars found in other milks which is the main reason it gets a bad reputation,” says Gregg.

It’s true that, as milks go, oat milk is pretty high on the glycemic index (GI), with a GI of 69. This number is a measure of how quickly a food raises blood sugar levels. It’s a scale from 0 to 100, with pure glucose assigned a value of 100. The higher the GI number, the more a food can potentially spike glucose.

For comparison, 1% dairy milk has a GI of 27.

But does oat milk really spike your blood sugar in some horribly unhealthy way? Gregg says probably not.

“The GI number is based solely on the food itself. If oat milk is consumed with food that has fiber, protein, or fat, any rise in blood sugar will be slowed down by these other nutrients,” she says. 

In other words, if you’re having a little oat milk in your coffee along with a balanced breakfast—say an omelet or avocado toast—it shouldn’t be anything to worry about.

What About the Ingredients?

There’s another oat milk ingredient that’s raised a few eyebrows—oil.

 “It’s often added to provide a better texture,” says Gregg. It also acts as an emulsifier, keeping the milk from separating in your coffee.

“When consumed in the correct amounts, oil isn’t unhealthy and can be included in a healthy diet. The amount of canola oil typically found in oat milk is likely not a cause for concern,” says Gregg.

Though she doesn’t think oat milk is unhealthy, Gregg does point out that oat milk is a processed food. Processed foods are something you may want to limit in your diet overall.

“Almost all processed foods have added emulsifiers and other ingredients to make them more palatable,” she says. “The amount of these ingredients present in oat milk, when consumed in moderation, is generally considered to be safe.”

How Does Oat Milk Stack Up to Other Milks?

Whether oat milk is the best choice for you depends on your preferences and situation. “For people with a lactose, nut, or soy allergy, oat milk is a great alternative,” says Gregg. She also points out that oat milk has beneficial nutrients, including beta-glucan and other phytonutrients and antioxidants.

“But  dairy milk is a much better source of protein than oat milk if that’s your goal, and dairy products are  a natural source of many nutrients like calcium, potassium, and vitamins, A, B12, and D,” says Gregg.

And if you’re closely watching your blood sugar for any reason, Gregg  says nut milk is probably a better choice than oat, especially if you aren’t combining oat milk with other foods.

So, is Oat Milk a Health Food?

Gregg says that oat milk is healthier than some beverages and not as healthy as others. It depends on what it replaces, what you eat it with, and how much you consume.

“I prefer to steer clear of classifying any food as a ‘health food,’” she says. “As with all foods, the pros and cons need to be weighed against your overall diet, preferences, and goals.”

The bottom line on oat milk, according to a registered dietitian?

“Oat milk can certainly be included in a healthy diet.”

Trump gag order partially lifted in hush money case ahead of first presidential debate

The judge who presided over Donald Trump’s hush money trial on Tuesday lifted some of the restrictions from his gag order.

The ruling by Judge Juan Merchan comes two days before Trump is set to debate President Joe Biden for the first time in the 2024 campaign.

Merchan’s ruling lifted restrictions on Trump’s ability to comment on the witnesses who testified against him during his trial, as well as a part of the order barring him from discussing the jury that convicted him, essentially finding the witnesses’ and the jury’s work had concluded so there was no fear of impacting the proceedings. The ruling left in place a part of the order barring Trump from going after court staff, individual prosecutors and “family members of any counsel, staff member, the Court or the District Attorney.”

The ruling said those restrictions would remain in place until Trump’s sentencing on July 11.

Injuries continue to plague WNBA teams. The Sparks and Dream are winless with key players sidelined

The injury bug has bitten several WNBA teams this season with both Los Angeles and Atlanta losing key pieces last week.

The Sparks will have to play without prized rookie Cameron Brink for the remainder of the year after she tore the ACL in her left knee. The injury also forced Brink off the U.S. Olympic 3×3 team as she was replaced by Sparks teammate Dearica Hamby.

The Dream are going to be missing Rhyne Howard for a bit too with no timetable for her return after she injured her ankle on Wednesday against Minnesota. Neither team has won a game since they went down, going a combined 0-6. Atlanta did get some good news with the return of Jordin Canada, who had been sidelined for the first part of the season with a hand injury. She made her season-debut in a loss to New York last Sunday.

While the Sparks and Dream seek to find ways to replace the production of their injured players, Las Vegas welcomed back Chelsea Gray. The point guard had been sidelined for the first part of the season with a leg injury she suffered in the WNBA Finals last year.

Gray made her debut last week and the Aces looked more like the two-time defending champions with victories over Seattle and Connecticut.

“I probably went through every emotion leading up to today,” Gray said of her return. “I was a little anxious all day. It’s been a long time since I’ve been out on that court. But the fans were amazing from the time I came out to warm up to the time I checked in the game. It was a rush and a feeling I missed a lot.”

New York remains in the top spot in this week’s AP WNBA power poll, but no longer unanimous after losing a game in Phoenix. The Liberty received nine first place votes and were followed by Minnesota ,who garnered the other four top votes. Las Vegas, Connecticut and Seattle followed the Lynx. Phoenix, Indiana and Chicago were the next three. Atlanta, Washington, Los Angeles and Dallas rounded out the poll.

Record ratings

The Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese matchups continue to draw record viewership. The third installment of the Fever-Chicago Sky budding rivalry that was played on ESPN last Sunday averaged 2.3 million viewers with a peak of 3.3 million. That’s the most to watch a WNBA game in 23 years — topping the last matchup between the two teams. There were more record-setting viewership numbers for Clark and the Fever with their game against Atlanta on Ion drew 1.2 million viewers on average, making it the most watched game on the network.

Caitlin corner

Clark had another strong week on the court, averaging 17 points, 9.7 assists and 7.3 rebounds to help Indiana win two of its three games. She set a franchise record with 13 assists in Indiana’s loss to Chicago on Sunday.

The No. 1 pick in the draft also won the Honda Cup, given to the top NCAA women’s college athlete, for the second consecutive year on Monday night. The Fever play a pair of road games at Seattle and Phoenix this week.

Rookie watch

While Dallas has struggled to find wins, dropping 12 straight games, Jacy Sheldon has made the most of her time lately, getting more comfortable on the court. She was a bright spot in an otherwise lost week. Sheldon averaged 12 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists while playing just over 34 minutes a game.

Player of the week

A’ja Wilson of Las Vegas earned AP Player of the Week honors. The forward averaged 26.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2 steals to help the Aces win both their games. Angel Reese of Chicago, Caitlin Clark of Indiana and Jonquel Jones of New York also received votes.

Game of the week

Las Vegas at Chicago, Thursday. It’s the first matchup between A’ja Wilson and Angel Reese — the only two players this season to have multiple games with at least 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Boeing Is Said to Offer Stock in Deal for Spirit AeroSystems

In a bid to acquire a key supplier, Boeing has shifted how it plans to pay for the deal, according to two people familiar with the negotiations, a move that could help the plane maker preserve money as it addresses safety and quality problems.

Boeing would use stock instead of cash to buy Spirit AeroSystems, said the two people, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the deal. One added that Boeing would pay more than $4 billion for Spirit, which produces aviation parts, including the body of the Boeing 737 Max, the company’s most popular plane.

One of the people familiar with the talks said that the decision to shift to stock from cash was not expected to significantly delay a deal, which could be announced as soon as next week.

Based on its stock price on Tuesday, Spirit has a market value of more than $3.6 billion.

News that Boeing was proposing to use its stock, rather than cash, to buy Spirit was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal.

Paying in stock could help Boeing’s financial situation as it invests in improving production quality. The Federal Aviation Administration limited the company’s ability to increase production of 737 Max, its most popular commercial jet, after the January incident. In May, Boeing said that its operations would use more cash than it brings in this year.

The negotiations to acquire Spirit have been complicated by the fact that Spirit also supplies parts to Boeing’s biggest competitor, Airbus. That company is expected to take over the operations of Spirit that produce parts for Airbus.

Federal investigators have said that the plane involved in the January incident appeared to have left a Boeing factory without the bolts needed to secure the panel in place. In the months that followed, Boeing has taken a number of steps to improve quality. Last week, its chief executive, Dave Calhoun, faced tough questioning from lawmakers about the episode and two fatal crashes involving the Max in late 2018 and early 2019.

Boeing’s problems with the 737 Max were compounded by the pandemic, which disrupted the supply chain across the aviation industry. While the supply of materials and parts has recovered somewhat, it remains challenged.

On Monday, Airbus lowered the number of commercial planes it expected to deliver to airlines this year to 770, from a previous estimate of around 800. The company, based in Toulouse, France, said it was struggling to get enough engines, plane structures and cabin equipment. As a result of that change and problems in its space business, Airbus lowered its profit and cash flow forecast for 2024. The company’s stock was down 10 percent on Tuesday after its announcement.

Actor Louisa Jacobson appeared to publicly come out as a lesbian and debut her relationship in an Instagram post over the weekend.

The caption read, “blessed to be entering the Joyful New Era bb,” and included flaming heart and LGBTQ Pride flag emojis. The first of six photos in the post was an image of Jacobson and Anna Blundell, whose verified Instagram bio says she’s a producer. The second photo is a screenshot of a recent New York Times article titled “We’re Entering a Joyful New Era of Lesbian Fashion.” The remaining images show Jacobson in a variety of ensembles one could describe as lesbian chic. 

Fans in the comments of Jacobson’s post noticed that the actor posted the photo carousel to Instagram on her mother’s 75th birthday.

At least two news outlets, New York Post’s Page Six and Out magazine, reported that Jacobson’s post initially had several other images, including a painting of the poet Sappho, who lived in ancient Greece and wrote about pursuing women lovers, and a photo of graffiti that read “live. laugh. lesbian.”

Jacobson, the daughter of Oscar-winning actor Meryl Streep, has followed in her legendary mother’s footsteps by attending Vassar College and then Yale University for her masters in Fine Arts. Jacobson stars in the HBO series “The Gilded Age” alongside Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski, which has been renewed for a third season

Jacobson, 33, is one of many stars to celebrate Pride Month by publicly coming out. Singer Maren Morris came out as bisexual earlier this month, and “Baby Reindeer” actor Jessica Gunning came out as a lesbian recently.

Why is eating well good for your mental health? 

Mental health is a complicated topic, and many factors can play a role in it, including physical activity and diet. For example:

  • Your brain uses about 20% of your energy from food and needs nutritious foods high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, proteins, complex carbs, and healthy fats to work properly. 
  • Eating mostly processed or refined foods can result in a low-nutrient diet, which may alter brain chemicals, meaning your brain could be less protected from damaging free radicals. This may lead to a higher risk of depression and anxiety.
  • Your food choices may also affect your gut and the billions of friendly bacteria that form your microbiome. These bacteria protect your gut lining, control inflammation, help you absorb nutrients, and send signals between your gut and brain (called the gut-brain axis) that influence mood and mental health. 
  • A balanced diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, oily fish, and seafood , such as with the Mediterranean diet, may lower the risk of depression by 25% to 35% compared to a diet high in processed foods.  

But it’s important to know that food isn’t a cure-all. 

According to Katherine Basbaum, RD, “mood disorders can last even if you eat well.” 

But Basbaum says eating healthy foods sets you up for success. “A healthy diet may improve your overall health and can help lower your risk for mood-related conditions.”

6 Potential Effects of a Healthy Diet on Your Brain and Mental Health

So, what’s the connection between the food you eat and your mental health? 

Food is fuel. It delivers key vitamins, minerals, and fats to your body (and your brain!) that help you make serotonin, lower inflammation, and support overall cognitive function, such as learning, memory, and attention.

1. Protect your brain with antioxidants

Free radicals are unstable, reactive molecules that can cause damage throughout the body. Unfortunately, they’re unavoidable.

A healthy diet—sometimes called an anti-inflammatory diet—may have the opposite effect, lowering inflammation and helping reduce the risk of inflammatory-related mood problems. 

Making healthy food swaps to include more fiber, omega-3s, vitamin C, and polyphenols from plants can help fight inflammation. 

3. Supports your brain with omega-3 fatty acids

Your brain needs omega-3 fatty acids to make new cells and pathways, store energy, send signals, and control inflammation. 

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, meaning they come only from foods. Your body can’t produce these on its own, making them an especially important part of your diet. 

Eating more foods rich in omega-3s can help lower inflammation, may help protect the brain, and may help with mild cognitive impairment and mood. But the research also shows conflicting results regarding mood. 

Studies have found that low intake of omega-3s may predispose some people to mood disorders and that eating more may help prevent mood-related conditions.

Other studies, though promising, show inconclusive results; therefore, larger studies are necessary to better understand how omegas affect mental health.

4. Supports the gut-brain connection

Fermented foods, such as yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, and tempeh, are rich in probiotics that help populate your gut with friendly bacteria. 

One review of the existing research, which included mostly animal studies, found that gut bacteria may influence how your brain reacts to stress, potentially lowering anxiety and depression symptoms. Further clinical research with human subjects is needed to draw any firm conclusions.

Probiotic foods may also help improve the signals between your gut and brain via your vagus nerve and receptors for brain chemicals. 

Bacteria make proteins that activate these receptors and nerves and signal your brain to regulate your emotions and improve your mood. 

5. Regulates your mood with magnesium and vitamins

A healthy diet for mental health gives your body vitamins and nutrients that nourish your brain, raise energy levels, and regulate mood. 

For example, magnesium may help balance stress hormones, improve stress and anxiety, and improve low mood symptoms such as weakness and fatigue. 

“B vitamins are other essential nutrients for proper brain and nerve function. In particular, getting enough B6 in your diet can help regulate your mood and prevent low moods,” says MyFitnessPal registered dietitian Katherine Bausbam.

Vitamin D has similar benefits. 

“A lack of vitamin D is linked to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and depression, and getting enough vitamin D in your diet may help balance your mood.” Basbaum explains. 

6. Boosts your brain power through proper hydration

The link between mental health and food also includes hydration. 

Your brain mass is 75% water, and too much or too little water may cause problems with thinking, memory, and mood. 

Even mild dehydration may affect your memory and alertness and cause more anxiety and fatigue. 

Tiredness and negative emotions, such as anger, confusion, hostility, and depression, also increase with mild dehydration. Drinking enough water throughout the day may help control your mental health and boost your brain power. 

According to Basbaum, the exact amount of water per day may be different for everyone, but the general recommendation is:

  • 13 cups daily for adult men
  • 9 cups daily for adult women

Foods That Help Support Mental Health

So, what exactly should you eat to support good mental health? 

A balanced diet includes plenty of protein, fiber, healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals from whole, natural, and hydrating foods. 

Make sure to include:

  • Fiber-rich whole grains: Brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat pasta or bread, quinoa, millet, farro, and buckwheat

Four suburban men charged with aggravated battery in Sunday Mount Greenwood attack

Four suburban men face multiple charges of aggravated battery for an attack on four other men early Sunday morning outside a Mount Greenwood restaurant.

Officers responded at 1:40 a.m., Sunday at Barraco’s Ristorante in the 3000 block of West 111th Street, where multiple men were in a verbal and physical altercation, police said.

Police charged Andrew Fedyk, 20, of La Grange Park, Frank Paris, 20, of River Forest, Harry Kenny, 20, of Glen Ellyn, and John Powers IV, 20, of Oak Park with aggravated battery in a public place, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery of a victim over 60, according to a news release.

Fedyk faces an additional charge for use of a false identification card, Paris faces a felony charge for robbery and Powers IV faces a felony count for aggravated battery with strangling.

The men battered four men, ages 20, 28, 45 and 61, police said.

Police said the four suspects fled but were arrested between 1:45 a.m. and 2:22 a.m. in the 11200 block of South Whipple, the 3000 block of West 111th Street and the 11100 block of South Albany, police said.

The 61-year-old victim suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

Ald. Matt O’Shea, 19th Ward, said the altercation happened after the four men were asked to leave and were escorted out of the restaurant.

“They attacked and beat an employee of the restaurant, striking him multiple times, leaving him bleeding on the sidewalk,” O’Shea said.

O’Shea said the men were to appear Tuesday at the Cook County Criminal Court Building for a hearing.

“The community’s outraged, and we’re just asking for our neighborhood to do what it always does, to support the family, support the business and keep the victim in their thoughts and prayers as hopefully they can make a full recovery,” O’Shea said.

Céline Dion Suffers Harrowing Health Crisis in Tearful Documentary Scene – E! Online

Dion shared that she had been diagnosed with a “very rare” progressive neurological disorder called stiff-person syndrome, surely the first time that most people had ever heard of it.

“As you know, I’ve always been an open book,” she said in an Instagram video. “I wasn’t ready to say anything before, but I’m ready now. I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through.”

She suffered muscle spasms that affected “every aspect” of her daily life, Dion explained, making it difficult to walk sometimes and, saddest of all, it was going to be impossible for her to go back on tour as she’d been planning.

“I’m working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again,” Dion said. “But I have to admit, it’s been a struggle.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, symptoms include stiff muscles in the torso, arms, and legs, and greater sensitivity to noise, touch, and emotional distress, all of which can trigger muscle spasms.

Family of hostage taken by Hamas says his son’s third birthday is marred by his absence

TEL AVIV — It’s Almog Levy’s third birthday on Tuesday, but his parents won’t be able to celebrate it with him. The last time he saw them was on Oct. 6, hours before his mother, Eynav, was shot dead by Hamas gunmen, who abducted his father Or.  

Watching him “calling for his parents every day, and [not] understand why he can’t meet them — I can’t even start to describe how horrible this feeling is,” Michael Levy, Or’s older brother, told NBC News on Monday. 

“He wants his parents back,” Levy said, after the Hostages and Missing Families Forum released a video showing his brother being taken captive alongside Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, and Eliya Cohen, 26. 

The video shows the men being kidnapped on Oct. 7 from the Supernova music festival in southern Israel — the site where Almog’s mother Eynav was killed. 

The three men are bloody and appear dazed as the Hamas militants shout in Arabic in the graphic footage, recorded by Hamas and reviewed by NBC News journalists. Part of Goldberg-Polin’s left arm is blown off as he lies on the back of a truck clearly in pain. 

It’s been nine months since Levy last saw his brother and “not in a million years” did he think it would take this long for the Israeli government to secure the release of the hostages, he said.

“I thought he’d be with us now — actually a few months ago,” Levy said of his brother, calling the intervening period “the longest nightmare I’ve ever had.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his fragile coalition government have faced fierce criticism from the families of the hostages, as he remains focused on his stated aim of destroying Hamas militarily. 

Over the weekend, Netanyahu appeared to back further away from a cease-fire agreement with Hamas that is supported by the Biden administration, saying the “intensive” phase of Israel’s war in Gaza would end soon and signaling that he would accept only a “partial” deal that would not end the war.

And there is growing frustration within Israel and on the international stage over Netanyahu’s handling of the war. More than 37,600 people in Gaza have been killed since Israel launched its offensive following Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attacks, in which some 1,200 people were killed and over 240 others taken hostage.

Asked what his message to the Israeli government would be, Levy said: “You need to do everything, everything in your power, to bring them back as soon as possible. We need to get to a deal now.” 

He added that the government was “running out of time” to secure the hostages’ freedom. “This video today just showed how horribly they are treated. I can just imagine how badly they are treated now,” he said.

Although more than 100 hostages were released as part of an exchange for Palestinian prisoners in late November, Israeli officials believe 120 remain in Gaza as of Monday and at least 44 are thought to be dead.   

Levy said he was determined to ensure that people thought of his brother as a name instead of a number.  

“He’s my baby brother,” he said, adding that he missed “calling him and crying about our lousy basketball team” and the “fact that I can pick up the phone and talk to him.” 

“I miss the small things,” he said.

A 29-year-old woman was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning after being dropped off at Jackson Park Community Hospital on the South Side, Chicago police said.

Shortly after 3:10 a.m., a woman with multiple injuries was dropped off at Jackson Park Hospital in the 7500 block of Stony Island Avenue. She was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

The incident was classified as a homicide, Police were speaking to a person of interest.
