The 2024 CMA Awards were filled with standout moments, and Texas was definitely at the heart of the night. From George Strait’s special recognition to Simone Biles’ memorable appearance, the Lone Star State had its moment in the spotlight.
The 2024 CMA Awards aired live Wednesday, from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
George Strait: The king takes his crown
The highlight of the evening? George Strait. The Texas legend was honored with the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. After a moving tribute performance, Strait took the stage to reflect on his incredible journey.
Following a series of heartfelt tribute performances by stars like Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton, George Strait took a moment to express his gratitude, sending special shoutouts to his fans, friends, and loved ones. Among those he honored was his wife of over 50 years, Norma Strait.
“It’s been an amazing 53 years,” Strait said, visibly emotional as his wife, Norma cheered him on.
And what a career it’s been. Strait’s legacy speaks for itself with 60 No. 1 hits, 33 Platinum or multi-platinum albums, and a record-breaking 17 CMA Awards. CMA CEO Sarah Trahern put it best:
“There have been few other artists as authentically Texas and authentically Country as George Strait, and Country Music fans all over the world have been better for it. As a three-time CMA Entertainer of the Year and the most nominated artist of all time, he serves as an inspiration and icon to many of the great, new artists we know today. I am thrilled we are awarding him with this deserving honor.”
Strait’s ability to combine the comfort of classic country with fresh, exciting performances makes him a true Texas icon—and a country music legend.

It wasn’t just Strait carrying the Texas torch. Olympic champion Simone Biles lit up the stage when she presented the Female Vocalist of the Year award. Biles, one of Texas’ brightest stars, brought her charm and confidence to the CMA stage, adding a dose of Lone Star magic to the night.
