‘Connect their brains,’ Texans British Brooks, Xavier Hutchinson, Wade Smith launch reading program at elementary school

HOUSTON – Reading to students at Mading Elementary School, Texans wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson and running back British Brooks cracked the books to impart knowledge and a passion for reading.

The Texans players along with retired Pro Bowl offensive guard Wade Smith spoke to students during a Reading with the Pros kickoff event about the importance of reading to support literacy outcomes, promote student attendance and foster a positive relationship with reading. It’s a partnership between Smith’s foundation and the Houston Independent School district.

“It was definitely exciting,” Brooks told KPRC 2. “I know it will have a long-lasting impact on the kids. With today’s technology, kids don’t pick up a book, but telling them how to engage with the book is almost like TV.”

“They had a lot of enthusiasm. They’re really excited. I’m glad I got to give back in this setting and show them how they can engage by physically doing it, mentally doing it and hearing it at the same time to continue to connect their brains. That’s the biggest impact I had today.”

An undrafted free agent from North Carolina, Brooks drew praise from coach DeMeco Ryans for delivering a big hit on special teams in his NFL regular-season debut Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in a 29-27 win.

“It felt great knowing I can go out there and be myself,” Brooks said, “And they allow us to go out there and take the field with my brothers.”
